Alex Straus, a New York native, and now member of the renown Bon Vivant family, could be considered one of the pioneers of the Los Angeles cocktail community. Bringing culture, history, and charm from the big city, Alex got his start at East Side Co., learning under the renowned Sasha Petrarske (of Milk and Honey fame). After working under him for over 2 years, Alex was approached by the owners of Tao ( NYC & LV ) to set up and supervise a fresh fruit cocktail program at their new pool concept, Tao Beach. He accepted, and after working a wildly successful inaugural year, he was ready to take on a new market farther west.
Meeting with Todd English enterprises in Los Angeles, they discussed Beso, Chef Todds newest restaurant with Eva Longoria. Alex agreed to be beverage director and wrote the fresh fruit cocktail menu and put together a diverse spirits catalog, which was very well received by press and public alike, and is still in place today. After almost two years, Straus decided to take his show to the Ocean and has assembled the cocktail bar on the roof of the historic Shangri-La hotel in Santa Monica named Suite 700.
Being named the cocktail director of Hemingway's Lounge, Alex wrote the fresh fruit cocktail menu, training and overseeing the entire bar staff in execution, education, and cocktail history.
Alex's most recent project has been the opening of Vodvil, where he is putting the bar program in to place and has created the cocktail menu for the new gaming concept. opening on Fairfax.
Consulting for numerous brands, venues and continually pursuing his spirit & hospitality education, keeps him busy when hes not shaking drinks at Hemingways.
